SAN FRANCISCO LODGE REPORT

ACTIVITIES IN 2004


Besides the social programs on the Activity Calendar, San Francisco Lodge had the following activities in 2004:

Civil Rights

  • President Faye Woo Lee attended the unveiling of the Year of the Tiger Stamp in honor of the Chinese New Year by the U. S. Postal Office.

  • News conferences were held to announce our endorsement of Retired Judge Lillian Sing, who is a member of SF Lodge, for Supervisor of District 1 and another news conference jj to announce our support for Proposition J.

  • Candidates for different public offices appeared before the Board of Officers,

  • A monthly program, "Forum with Policy Makers" was initiated. Every month, a different gg City and County Supervisor came to dialogue with members and community people,

  • The Board voted to support two propositions sponsored by Assemblyman Leland Yee

  • President Faye Woo Lee, Past Presidents Stephen Q. C. Lee, Herb and Virginia Gee participated in a ceremony to honor 90 soldiers killed in World War II.

  • President Faye Woo Lee was appointed by Mayor Gavin New^som of San Francisco to the Human Rights Commission.

  • Special meeting was held to consider endorsement of candidates and propositions. Slate cards with our recommendation were sent to members and other Chinese Americans before the election.

  • President Lee represented San Francisco Lodge to hear Mayor Newsom's State of the City address.

  • President Faye Woo Lee, Past President Stephen Q. C. Lee, Vice President Joan Sung and her husband Charlie Sung Participated in the Veteran' Day Parade to honor all veterans.



Community Service

Besides the Honoring Senior Week Program and the Children's Christmas Party, San Francisco Lodge co-sponsored with Red Cross for First Aid Training in Cantonese, and their Youth for Elderly Program, co-sponsored with New Comer Service for New Immigration Law Seminar and a Transportation Workshop, with Self-help for the Elderly for social activities for seniors, with World Channel 32 for Karaoki Cantonese Opera

Contest and with Chinatown Economic Development Group and Channel 32 ior a reception for the 49ers.

Community Activities

President Lee attended
  • receptions at the Consulate General of the People's Republic oi China and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office.
  • Installation of the Board of Directors of Chinese Hospital,
  • Installation of the President of Chinese Benevolent Association, and Gee Duck Sam Duck Family Association,
  • retirement party for Retired Superior Court Judi'e Lillian Sing,
  • celebration of Assemblyman Leland Yee\s
  • Appointment as President ProTempore,
  • fund raiser for Salvation Army,
  • Christmas Party for the Veterans of Foreign War,
  • Celebration of the SO111
  • Anniversary of Chinese Time
  • and the Launching of Mine Pao.


Education

San Francisco Lodge sponsored Scholarship Contest and Chinese School Scholarship Contest. In the Essay Contest sponsored by Grand Lodge, one of San Francisco Lodge's contestant won first prize. SF Lodge sponsored a Chinese School Teacher's Appreciation Dav. Five Chinese Schools participated in the Calligraphy Contest.

Real Estate & Investment

San Francisco Lodge filed a law suit against a commercial tenant, who had not paid rent for a commercial unit, a basement and an apartment for three year and refused to leave. It went to trial. We won a total victory. The tenant was evicted and the judge awarded us back rent and attorney fee.

San Francisco Lodge went to two Rent Board hearings to defend against a tenant who filed claim for damage due to the leak in the ceiling. Another complaint took us to mediation at the Rent Board, then arbitration.

The Department of Building Inspection called us in to explain our missing the completion deadline for the retrofitting of the Clay St. building.

SF Lodge stopped unauthorized payment for P.G. & E bills for two apartments and payment for water and P.G. & E bills for another apartment.

The building had final inspection. Retrofitting was completed and the R.E. & I Committee celebrated.

President Lee successfully mediated the long dispute of two tenants over their shared water bill.

All vacant commercial and residential units were rented out.

ACTIVITIES IN 2005

In addition to the social programs on the Activity Calendar, San Francisco Lodge had the following activities for the months of January through July, 2005.

Civil Rights

The Veterans History Project of C.A.C.A. was held on February 18 and May 28 at SF Lodge. These veterans were interviewed, videotaped, and copies of these interviews were sent to the Library of Congress: Danny Kirn, Lincoln Leung, Ron Won, Harvey Wong, Raymond Wong, Robert B. Wong, Edward Yu.

The Board voted to support two California Assembly bills: 1) AB 775 Prohibiting Children as Interpreters. An amendment using children under the age of 15 as medical interpreters 2) AB U7 Acupuncture: Use of Culturally appropriate Language. The term would change the term "Oriental" to "Asian" m sections of the California Business and Professional Code, relating to medicine and acupuncture.

Lawrence Wong representing Grand Lodge and Faye Woo Lee represent SF Lodge and the Human Rights Commission attended a meeting with 49ers' owner John York and some of his officials to express outrage regarding the use of offensive videos for their diversity training. This meeting was held at the C.A-C.A. auditorium.

Community Service

  • SF Lodge Co-sponsored the Self-Help Elderly program on February 7.
  • California Health Care provided us with a $1300 grant for Red Cross training.
  • A letter of support in concept to the Asian Healthcare Institute was sent.
  • President Joan Sung, Associate Lawrence Wong, and Past Presidents Virginia and Herb Gee attended the Asian Week Foundation press conference.
  • President Joan Sung, and members Teresa Lai and Stephen Lau were on the UN Chinese Host Committee for the mayors from ten Chinese cities who were to attend the UN World Environmental Conference in San Francisco.
  • President Joan Sung and Past President Faye Woo Lee attended a community meeting of the Commission on the Status of Women.
  • A letter of support for the Asian Pacific Islanders Heritage Street Fair was sent.
  • President Joan Sung joined Human Rights Commissioner Faye Woo Lee and other SF Lodge members in attending Mayor Newson's declaration ceremony for Asian Pacific Heritage Month at the City Hall Rotunda.
  • SF Lodge's Tsunami Relief Fundraiser Dance raised $3,000.00. Contributions were sent to the American Red Cross Tsunami Relief Fund.


Community Activities

President Joan Sung and Bd. Members attended Installation of the Bd. Of Directors of Chinese Hospital, Salvation Amiy fundraiser, UN World Environment Day banquet welcoming new Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Oificfc, David Guo Min Tsai.

Education

32 students from local high schools participated in the 2005 National Essay Contest. Melodv Pak won 6th place and received $100.00.

Chinese School Teacher Appreciation dinner was held on April 28. Teachers from Chinatown Chinese Schools were honored with dinner and a teacher from each school was honored with a monetary gift. This event was chaired by Past President Steve Lee.

Scholarship interviews for high school seniors were coordinated by VP Davace Chin. Members and President Joan Sung served on interview panels. Fourteen scholarship recipients received their awards of $500 each on June 11 , Western Night.

Real Estate and Investment

The retrofit project on SF Lodge's Clay Street property began in year 2000. After five years of construction delays and other problems, the project is complete. Kudos to members of the RE&I Committee who worked tirelessly on every phase of this project.
