Biennial Report 2006 - July 2007 The Phoenix Lodge has committed to establishing goals for the revitalization of the lodge in better serving the Chinese community. These goals include:
Communications The CACA Phoenix Lodge has been on a campaign in getting everyone to know that there is an organization that will assist them in civil rights situations. Membership meetings are now a regular calendar event and everyone is invited to attend. Membership Increased membership has been a major goal of the Phoenix Lodge. Membership drives have been established throughout the greater Phoenix area and in 2007 the Phoenix Lodge has raised its membership roll 200%. Inactive members were contacted and their membership status reestablished. New members have been added to the Phoenix Lodge and the main goal, at the present time, is to sign up younger members to the organization. Community Involvement CACA has played a big part in our Chinese community in Phoenix. CACA is one of 16 different organizations that make up Chinese United Association of Greater Phoenix. In the past few years CACA has had two members as Presidents and others on the Executive Boards of the Association. CACA members played a big part in the 4th of July celebration and the crowning of the new Miss Phoenix Chinese Queen Pageant 2007. For the last 4 years CACA members became a part of the Arizona Dragon Boat Festival and raced a 22 man dragon boat crew with other dragon boats from the mainland and other countries. CACA members were also involved in the Chinese Week Festival held at the Chinese Cultural Center. The three day event drew a crowd of 50,000 participants. Recently, CACA members played a major part in the saving of The Sun Mercantile Building, the only Chinese building left of what then old Phoenix Chinatown. Today, the noble building still stands and the fight continues. CACA members also make up a large part of the American Legion Thomas Tang Post 50 in the Phoenix area. Every year on Memorial Day, members place American flags on the graves of Chinese Veterans and participate in one of America's biggest Veteran Day Parade. Presently, CACA members have been involved in Chinese Senior housing. Members have proposed the building of the "Hong Lok House," a future HUD housing project for the ever growing Chinese Senior population. CACA was also involved in the re-election of Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and the welcoming of New York Representative Ellen Young to the Phoenix area. CACA Joins the Fight The Tucson community was having a problem with an ad for Chinese food using the word "Chinaman". The ad saying "...old Chinaman are getting expensive these days" is demeaning and disrespectful for people of Chinese descent. The Phoenix Lodge was invited to attend a special press conference in Tucson on the "Chinaman" ad issue. The conference was held at the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center that involved members of the Tucson Chinese Association, City of Tucson, Pima County Supervisors, Tucson City Council, Tucson Urban League, and the Phoenix CACA Lodge. The Phoenix Lodge and other Asian organizations from across the country sent letters of disapproval to the owner of the restaurant that eventually resulted in the removal of the offensive ad. Media The Phoenix Lodge has used the media in giving information about who we are and what we have been doing in our community. CACA articles, written by Phoenix Lodge members and photos taken by our photographers have appeared in local English/Chinese papers such as the Asian American Times and the Asian Sun News. Chinese newspapers such as the Arizona Chinese News and the Chinese Next Weekly reported our articles to those who can only read Chinese. Workshops Last September, the Phoenix Lodge participated in the 4th National CACA Retreat and Workshop which developed a strategic 5 year plan to improve the services and impact of CACA. Future A special CACA Phoenix Lodge web site will be created to help with information about our organization and our officers. The site will help anyone or any organization needing assistance with issues that could be discussed and successfully corrected. Future projects under consideration are sports projects for our youth and seniors and community service programs for our Asian community. Submitted by John H.
