The Mississippi Lodge of the Chinese American Citizen's Alliance currently has 46 members in good standing. We have been busy since the last Biennial conference. We had members attend the Houston Gala as well as the Southern Cruise for Chinese who srew up in the southern part of the United States. One member. Randy Kwan, has been working with the Veteran's Project helping interview and video interviews completed by Chinese War veterans. Raymond Wong has also been involved in filming greetings from local Chinese community members to help brighten the days of elderly members who have had to move away due to failing health. The MS Lodge is also involved in fundraising through yard sales to raise money for special projects and scholarships. However, the special project proposed for this year, and carrying over into the next year is the preservation of what is believed to be the first Chinese Cemetery in the State of Mississippi. Due to the restrictions preventing Chinese from being buried in white cmd black cemeteries, they had to purchase their own. Some dates at the original cemeterv date back as far as the late 1800's. The MS Lodge and the Chinese Cemetery Association worked hand-in-hand to gather data and prepare to apply tor historical status. Much of the historical data and research was conducted by Reverend Ted Shepherd, the spiritual leader of the Greenville, MS, Chinese Mission. The MS Lodge has also dedicated itself in expanding the knowledge of our members by having educational prosrams at our meetings, the most recent being Dr. Ruby Moy and Dr. David Joe discussing cardiovascular disease. We are hoping to continue these special projects as well as implementing others during the next year. . |
